The Bialetti Moka 3 Cup Espresso Maker
The Bialetti Moka 3 Cup Espresso Maker is a stove top percolator almost identical to the one provided for me in the furnished apartment I rented in Italy. I was able to find it online for the very reasonable price of $25.00. The quality of the espresso produced is not quite as excellent as that made by commercial machines which often yield a rich head of crema, but it does make a decent enough espresso at home without having to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment.
The device works well on either gas or electric stoves, but is slightly problematic for having such a small diameter base - you need to keep it to the edge of the burner, with the handle to the outside. If you take this precaution, the handle stays cool enough to take the pot off the stove without using a pot holder. This espresso maker makes about 8 ounces of espresso at a time, which I consider two cups, not three, as the name claims.
It does cool down rather quickly, so if you are one person, you will have to warm up the second cup in the microwave, since once it has finished percolating, you have to remove it from the stove top. Another small drawback is that you have to screw the base into the top half rather tightly to achieve the snug seal required to make it function without steam escaping, and this makes it a little difficult to loosen when you want to clean it. Cleaning is easy enough if you do it promptly. I'd give this Bialetti Moka 3 stars out of 5.Pros
