Krups Caffe Duomo

by Melissa

Krups 985-42 Il Caffe Duomo
Coffee and Espresso Machine

We had been through about 3 coffee makers in about 3 years and were looking for a new one that would last a while. I had always known that Krups was a good brand but usually out of our price range.

Saw this one at Sam's Club and loved the espresso, latte and cappucino feature and the reasonable price and decided to give it a try. We've had it about 2 1/2 years now and love it. It makes great coffee every time and the ability to make a quality latte at home is great. It is sturdy and easy to use. We have hard water and I do need to clean it on a regular basis, but I'd have to do that with any maker. It brews the coffee quickly, unlike some coffee makers that seem to take forever.

The only negative thing that I've found is that the switches on the bottom are easily bumped on, so you need to double check that it is off when you are finished.

I would highly recommend this coffee maker, especially to anyone that would like to make lattes, espresso or cappucinos at home versus paying the high price at coffee shops.

I would give this coffee maker 4 3/4 stars with just a bit knocked off for the touchy on off switch.

Only coffee maker you'll ever need
by: Elizabeth

I bought my Krups Il Caffee Duomo in the early 1990's. It is now 2013 and after daily use for at least 20 years, it still looks fabulous, and runs like a top. Excellent German engineering and quality. Never a hiccup in 20 years and has needed almost no maintenance - I had to replace the espresso carafe once after a careless bump. It is a wonderful machine, best coffee maker investment you could ever make at this small home appliance level!

Espresso side is quite disappointing
by: Anonymous

– good coffee
- save on counter space
- long-lasting machine

– poor espresso
- small coffee carafe

3 out of 5

I have had the Krups “Il Caffe Duomo” coffee and espresso maker for four years. We received it slightly used from a friend; I don’t know that I would have paid Krups’ price for it – somewhere around $100 at the time.

I have found that combining the two functions was not the best idea; the machine makes wonderful coffee but the espresso side is quite disappointing. The cup of espresso comes out lukewarm and weak, and will never give you the delicious crema the discerning espresso drinker desires.

I have given up trying to get a cup of espresso out of this machine, also partly because the steam wand stopped working after one or two uses. I usually use our Bialetti Italian-style espresso maker instead.

On the other hand, the regular coffee side works beautifully and shows no signs of stopping. It brews quickly and the coffee is hot and strong. One con is that some people might want a larger carafe; this one makes 6 full-sized cups of coffee, though it’s listed as making “8 5-ounce cups.” Who wants a 5-ounce cup of coffee?

This sometimes causes difficulty when we have large dinner parties or weekend guests who drink more coffee. The machine has held up well over the years; its casing looks just as nice as when we first bought it. Though it takes up a good deal of counter space, separate espresso and coffee brewers would take up even more, so I feel like I’m actually saving on counter space.

double espresso with coffee topper !!!
by: Anonymous

I really like having a coffee maker and espresso machine in one unit because I like a double espresso with a coffee topper. The only thing I don't like about this unit is the burner is too hot, and the coffee tastes burnt if left for too long. I got mine in black, and I believe it comes in white as well. It's fairly easy to take apart and clean, and the pieces can be placed on the top shelf of the dishwasher. It takes the large cone shaped filters, and the cone shaped Gold Tone permanent filter which I prefer over the paper. Krupps II Caffe Duomo I give it a 4 out of 5.
